This article was originally written when the RPi PICO came out. I was not impressed. But things change and the RPi Foundation have now (late June 2022) released the Raspberry Pi Pico W complete with 2.4Ghz WiFi and Bluetooth 5.2 while being a drop-in replacement for the RP2040 chip used in the original Pico.

Now, given current chip pricing, whether or not this will be attractive remains to be seen – it looks like a there has been a price increase from (Pi-Hut) £4.20 to £5.90 – the former being somewhat higher than the prices I mentioned less than a year ago. WiFi in the new board is supported in software at launch, sadly, Bluetooth is not – which makes the latter a tad pointless for now – but – something new – so please view the info overleaf in historical context.
